Abstract

Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is a current educational technology that has been widely used in language learning, where applications and materials are used to facilitate English vocabulary acquisition. This study aimed to investigate TESL pre-service teachers’ knowledge of MALL use, how MALL helped pupils acquire English vocabulary, and the practicality and usability of MALL tools. This research used a quantitative method by employing a survey design and a total of 103 research respondents was selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a 5-point Likert Scale questionnaire and analysed
using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 27.0. Results revealed that TESL pre-service teachers had a moderately high level of knowledge towards MALL use to acquire English vocabulary with a mean score of 4.33. Additionally, TESL preservice teachers exhibited a moderately high level of agreement on MALL’s contribution in helping pupils improve their English vocabulary (mean score=4.39). The result also showed that the majority of TESL pre-service teachers possessed a moderately high level of understanding regarding the practicality and usability of MALL (mean score=4.49), indicating their positive perceptions towards MALL use. This demonstrated TESL pre-service teachers acknowledged the potential benefits of MALL use as a strategy to enhance English vocabulary learning. This research holds significant implications for TESL pre-service teachers, teacher training institutions and school administrators in promoting MALL integration to enhance pupils’ English vocabulary acquisition.
